Overnight Visits | After First Year

Overnight Visits
Overnight activities are not allowed during the first 12 months of a match, nor are they a necessary part of the volunteer/youth relationship. Therefore, they are not encouraged. Further, overnights out-of-town are not encouraged as they may involve excessive time.

After First Year
In matches over a year old, there may be occasions when an overnight activity may need to be considered. Initially, the decision to consider an overnight activity is a matter for the parent, the volunteer, and the child. If these individuals are considering an overnight visit, the volunteer and the parent must discuss the proposed overnight with the case manager.

Advance Notice

You must give your case manager seven days advance notice in consideration of an overnight. This allows the case manager time to respond to the request within his or her work demands. The case manager may deny an overnight request when the seven-day notice is not given.

Limits

A maximum of six overnight requests can be made during a one-year period. The agency expects that overnight requests will be limited to no more than one per month (30 day period).

After the first year, overnights over the maximum of six, will be given consideration when a professional case plan indicates such is in the best interest of the child.

Agency Requirements

The case manager will discuss with the parent and the volunteer the agency requirements for overnights. The discussion will include:
  • The need for separate beds for the volunteer and the child.
  • A discussion between the parent and the volunteer about whether the child is afraid of the dark, a bed-wetter, a sleep walker or sleep talker, or is subject to nightmares; whether the child will go to bed by him or herself and whether the child has ever slept away from home before.
  • Whether there will be any other individuals present for the overnight.
  • Where the parent can be reached during the overnight period.
  • If the overnight is out of town, the case manager will suggest the need for a special medical release.
Case Manager Can Prohibit Overnight

After the case manager hears the terms of the proposed overnight, the case manager will have the right to prohibit the overnight.

Violation of Policies

Violation of these overnight policies is grounds for termination of the match.

Emergencies

Overnights will be accepted in the case of emergencies, such as bad weather, mechanical car problems, emergency health issues, and potential of abuse to the child by another third party. The case manager must be notified as soon as possible when an emergency overnight has occurred.
