The volunteer process has roughly
seven steps and includes:
- Inquiry. Contact us
and we will schedule a time for you to meet with your Volunteer Match
Coordinator.
- Background/reference checks. Bring 5 references, only one
from a family member, to your meeting. During the first 15 minutes you
will fill out an application and list your references.
- Your Meeting. You tell us about you! This process allows us
a chance to get to know you. We will learn about the skills and qualities
you bring to a relationship with a child. This information is key in
our efforts to have you matched successfully.
- You're Approved! Once your application is approved you'll be
contacted by a coordinator. A potential Little has been identified for
you based on your preferences and interests. We review the kids on our
waiting list and match you with a child who has similar preferences.
We review both the mentor and child's preferences and work with you
to help create a perfect match.
- Pre-Match (This is not required for School Based Mentoring.) A time
is set for you to meet with your potential Little's parent. This is
the time for you and the parent to talk about the child and everyone's
expectations and desires for the match. Our experience has been that
the parent is an integral part of the match and it's important that
the mentor and parent are able to form a functioning relationship and
feel positive about the match.
- Match. It's time for the mentor and child to meet! Once all
parties agree to the match you finally get to meet each other. After
a review of expectations each party signs the match agreement. The match
is ready to begin building its foundation. Big Brothers Big Sisters
staff will provide any necessary support and guidance to help ensure
the success of the match. The agency also sponsors a tremendous amount
of activities throughout the year for matches to attend.
